| 8th August 2010 | The Michael Healy memorial competition was held on Friday last and was well supported by members. It was an evening competition and kicked off at 7.00pm. There was a light westerly breeze and many anglers managed to land a few fish. The senior competition was won by James Kearney with a fine rainbow of 1.16kg. The junior competition was won again by C.Keogh, this time with a fish weighing 0.88kg. Congratulations to the Irish Junior fly fishing team on comming second in the recent international in the UK. Two Lough Lene Angling Association members were on the team - Dylan Olin and Peter McGuigan were on the team. This was Dylan's last year on the team after fishing 4 internationals. Peter has retained his place and will be joining another member - Carl Owens in the next international to be fished in Scotland next year. Congratulations and well done. I would like to remind all members that the Chairman's Annual Invitation Charity Competition will be held on the last Sunday (26th) in September. The format will be the same as previous years i.e. a pairs competition. Anyone wishing to put up prizes can contact either Tommy Fagan or the Club directly. All contact details can be seen on the contacts page. This year all proceeds will go to the Irish Wheelchair Association. Remember to put this date in your diary |
| 23rd July 2010 | The Larry Mulligan memorial Cup was held last Friday night. The evening started well but as darkness fell it got noticably colder. There were some lovely fish caught and congratulations to Joe Lenehan (who won the seniors with a fish of 1.24kg) and C.Keogh who won the juniors with a fish of 1.22kg. The Green Peter seems to be well up at this stage with some cracking fish being caught and lost!!. Jim Reilly landed a fine fish during the week. The fish weighed 7lb 8oz and can be seen on the gallery page - its the biggest trout there!! There have also been a small number of Mayfly seen hatching around the lake - especially ath the cross rocks and around the big Island. Regarding Water Safety, we would ask anglers to refrain from motoring "flat out" around the lake. Members have made complaints about the wash from these boats. There have also been a numbers of swimmers seen in the middle of the lake. These people are almost impossible to see when motoring so we would ask members to exercise caution and slow down |
| 13th June 2010 | Angling pressure remains light but some trout are being caught on small sedges and daddies all fished dry. The fishing cannot be described as easy though anglers who persist can be rewarded with some fine fish between 1 - 2lbs The Paddy Dolan pike competition was held on Sunday. Weather conditions were not great with heavy showers and strong westerly winds. The competition was won by Tom Fagan with a fine pike of 5.46kg ( caught on a small copper and silver spoon ). Philip Keena won the juniors with a fish of 3.36kg. The sponsor of the competition Paddy Dolan came third with a nice fish of 4.42kg. Well done Paddy!! Michael O'Neill landed a beautiful wild brown trout of 5.25lbs in the competition. It was weighed and returned to fight another day. |
| 6th June 2010 | There havn't been too many anglers on the lake over the last two weeks which was due to the fact that many headed west for the mayfly. This is traditionally a quiet time for Lough Lene. Some trout have been caught mainly on olive and sedge patterns. Now for something completely different !!!. Well known angling guide Gerry Olin of Esox Lodge in Belturbet spent a day on Lough Lene flyfishing for pike. Conditions were not ideal but Gerry landed five pike to 7.5lbs on the fly. It was interesting to note that water clarity was very good and the pike were more interested in flies than they were in lures. |
| 23rd May 2010 | The duckfly is virtually over but the fishing is still proving difficult. There are plenty of trout to be seen rising on the lake but what they are taking is difficult to work out. The Wardell Cup was fished on Sunday but like the trout, the pike didn't oblige. In difficult bright sunny conditions Seamus Eighan landed a fine pike of almost 10lbs to win the seniors while Pierce Coroon won the juniors with a nice pike of almost 5lbs. The rest of the contestants got great suntans !!!!!! |
| 20th April 2010 | A lot has happened since our last news update. The weather has finally settled down and hopefully we have seen the last of the snow and hard frosts. As we speak the duckfly are well and truely up on the lake , however, the fishing is proving very frustrating. There are good numbers of trout can be seen feeding on the surface but they are proving very difficult to catch. The qualifier for the Irish Youth Fly Fishing Team was held two weeks ago. Fishing was not very easy with the top ten anglers qualifying for the Irish Team. The winner had six fish. Congratulations to our junior member Carl Owens who qualified. Pike fishing has not really started yet but there are two points of interest.Firstly, ( is this a record) a large pike of 34lbs+ was seen in distress wedged between two boats at Fagan's point. A number of anglers assisted in the rescue of the fish, it was released, weighed and returned to the lake to fight another day. Secondly, Craig Sheridan decided to give fly fishing for pike a try - as the trout were proving difficult. We understand he was using a fly of his own tying - a wooly bugger variant. Craig hooked and landed a fine pike of 10lbs. We hope to have a photo soon. This is the biggest fish caught on the fly on the lake so far this year. The Peadar Caffrey competition was held last Sunday - fishing proved very difficult with large numbers of anglers catching nothing. The competition was won by P.J.Lynham with a fine wild brown trout of .96kg. Well done P.J. Finally we would like to remind anglers that it is forbidden to fish inside the roped off area at "the cut" (down by the diving board). |
| 28th March 2010 | The past fortnight has not been very pleasant with cold winds but thankfully not too much rain.Fishing can be best described as sporadic with some anglers doing quite well and others having blank days. Trolling is not as effective as it was earlier in the season while fly fishing seems to be producing better results. The duckfly is just starting to appear but the weather forecast is not good for next week and this may affect the hatches. The Lough Lene cup was held on Sunday and some fine fish were landed (the results can be seen on the Results page). Congratulations to Jason Darby who won the seniors and to April Flanagan who won the juniors. The Irish youths qualifier will be fished on Lough Lene os Saturday 10th April. Any juvenile member who wishes to fish this competition should contact the club straight away. |
| 13th March 2010 | Lough Lene is fishing reasonably well at the moment on both fly and troll. Craig Sheridan had a lovely rainbow of 4lb during the week on the fly. The fish was caught quite late in the evening - around 6pm. A picture of Craig and his fish can be seen on the gallery page. We would like to ask all anglers if you are lucky enough to catch a brown trout to please consider returning the fish alive. The brown trout are our breed stock and we need them to spawn next year. Remember, the deadline for paying your membership subscriptions is fast approaching - you must pay your membership fees on or before 31st March 2010. Failure to do so will mean YOU WILL LOOSE your membership and your place will be offered to the next person on the waiting list YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED |
| 7th March 2010 | Angling conditions have been very cold this week with only the hardiest of anglers going fishing. Those that went fishing were well rewarded. One of the biggest fish this season was a 6lb brown caught by David O'Neill on a lane minnow. Paddy Gallagher landed a beautiful 5.25lb brown on the fly. Both fish were returned alive to fight another day. Dublin anglers Gerry and Dylan Olin had a good day on Saturday with 12 trout on the fly. Most were rainbows and fell to the blob fly, in the lower half of the lake!! Ronnie Young had a great day on Sunday trolling with an old type lane minnow landing 4 trout to 2.5lb, a small pike and he finally lost the lure in a very large pike. Generally it is still very cold on the lake with some ice still to be found on the shoreline. If you can bear the cold weather it is well worth while giving Lough Lene a try - remember to wrap up well. Finally if you need to get any new fishing gear you should contact Viking Tackle on 01-2869215. You will get discounts of 10 - 20% but you must present your Lough Lene Angling Association membership card. Viking tackle stock everything from flies to boat engines - so check out their website Viking Tackle |
| 2nd March 2010 | Yesterday was the opening day of the season and Lough Lene held a surprise for us all. Anglers travelled from near and far only to be disappointed - for the first time in over 40 years the lake was frozen over on opening day. It was virtually impossible to get out fishing and many anglers left to fish elsewhere. Those who hung around for a few hours were rewarded around 3 o'clock when the "Ice Pack" broke up and the lake could be fished in places. One such angler was Ken Murray (known by some as John West!!!!) who landed a fine rainbow of just over 4lbs on the buzzer. As far as we know this was the best fish reported on the opening day this year - a photo would be nice Ken! Remember, you must pay your membership fees on or before 31st March 2010. Failure to do so will mean YOU WILL LOOSE your membership and your place will be offered to the next person on the waiting list YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED |
| 9th February 2010 | The AGM was held in Collinstown Hall and was well attended. Gerry Doyne has stood down from the position of secretary. The club would like to thank Gerry for the work done over the last two years. Dick Mockler was elected to the position of secretary and we would like to wish Dick all the best in his new post. It was announced at the meeting that the Zebra Mussel has been detected in Lough Lene. This is alarming but unfortunately nothing can be done about it at the moment. We would request that anglers with boats would not put them onto the lake until the after the last weekend in February. The Youth Qualifer will be held on Lough Lene this year on Sat 10th April. At the meeting concern was raised about the increase in engine size being used by anglers. Complaints were received about anglers using 10-15hp engines or higher. These anglers are motoring at high speed. This is dangerous for these anglers and also other anglers who are hit by the wash from these boats. Please slow down and have some consideration for other water users. It was also agreed that all boats on Lough Lene should be clearly numbered to allow ease of identification. Finally, it was also agreed that there would be no increase in Membership numbers and new members would be admitted if and when spaces became available. Therefore, you must pay your membership fees on or before 31st March 2010. Failure to do so will mean YOU WILL LOOSE your membership and your place will be offered to the next person on the waiting list YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED |
